necklaces!!

http://lightgivesheat.org/lghfilms/currentproject - so amazing & inspiring! watch video for the story

They've come! I have my first shipment in of 10 necklaces to sell to friends & family.
They are beautiful beaded necklaces made by women in Uganda from lacquered strips of recycled paper, and the $20 you spend on one goes to creating sustainable and consistent weekly incomes for these beautiful women. Each necklace is unique and comes with the photo and story of the woman who made it.

3 of the 10 I'm selling are already accounted for! Call or message me quick if you want one! I wear mine daily, either looped once or twice around my neck, or multi-wrapped around my wrist as a bracelet for a daily reminder to look beyond myself and give to the needs of others. Selling them in 6 weeks gives me a chance to win a trip to Uganda!

So let me know if you want one for yourself, or to use as gifts for your friends & family!

consumerism for good

I got into a good chat with a coworker this morning on the way that America consumerism is much too focused on what we don't have vs. enjoying the amazing blessings we do have; the focus is different outside of the U.S. - in general, people in other countries get by with what they do have and are not as blinded by the "American Dream" of having more and more unnecessary material things.

I want people to know that the daily choices you make can have a real impact on the lives of others.
For example:

My favorite necklace/bracelet is made by a woman in Uganda; it came with her picture and story, and all the money paid for it goes towards sustainable incomes in Uganda.
They also sell bags, other jewelry, and shirts. {By the way, I ordered my first batch of necklaces to sell - contact me if you are interested!}

Another bracelet I wear daily was made by a woman who was freed from sex slavery in Nepal; now the freed women guard the borders in order to prevent more sex-trafficking and also make bracelets to sell to raise awareness and end the injustice. There are also many other countries and handmade crafts represented on this website, from jewelry and bags to artisan papers and silks.

My picnic basket that I adore - made by a woman in Ghana, paid for with "Success Wages" (higher than fair trade), through a non-profit run by a single man working with artisans in 15 different African countries and the Fair Trade Federation.

Coffee with a mission to help a community in Rawanda torn apart by genocide, also with higher than fair trade wages, what they are calling "Community Trade":

Someday I aspire to open a missions-minded business with others in mind; a coffee shop/bakery with a boutique that sells only fair trade merchandise, something like this:

worship

"How deep the Father's love for us,
How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure

How great the pain of searing loss,
The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the chosen One,
Bring many sons to glory

Behold the Man upon a cross,
My sin upon His shoulders
Ashamed I hear my mocking voice,
Call out among the scoffers

It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life
I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything
No gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection

Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom"

~Stuart Townend

"O God have mercy, reveal to me my sin,
The guilt the shame the darkness, innate within
The blood of Jesus washes and makes me clean
Condemned now I’m pardoned, once bound now I’m free, now I’m free

To the God of victory All glory be to One Who’s conquered all
Every tongue will sing To the Risen King oh the wonder of it all
Just to think that You love me a wretch like me
Aloud I will rejoice! Aloud I will rejoice!
Aloud I will rejoice

O Father of my spirit, O King of all my days
Lead me to repentance, By Your amazing grace
O may my sin be bitter, so Christ will be sweet
I trust in your promise, life eternally, life eternally

Sing it loud, shout it out, rejoice, rejoice
Jesus, is King, victorious!"

~Michael Bleecker & Patricia Ryan Clark

"You are stronger
You are stronger
Sin is broken
You have saved me
It is written
Christ is risen
Jesus, You are Lord of all"

in a mirror darkly

"Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth." (Colossians 3:2, ESV)

"But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words." (I Thessalonians 4:13-18, ESV)

"But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy." (I Peter 2:9-10, ESV)

"Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect." (Romans 12:1-2, NIV)

"Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is." (Ephesians 5:15-17, NIV)

"Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone." (Colossians 4:5-6, NIV)

"Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.

Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God." (I Peter 2:11-16, ESV)

"Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct." (I Peter 1:13-15, ESV)

"Finally, then, brothers, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, just as you are doing, that you do so more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness. Therefore whoever disregards this, disregards not man but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you." (I Thessalonians 4:1-8, ESV)

"Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church, of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints. To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me." (Colossians 1:24-29, ESV)

"But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God’s will, than for doing evil." (I Peter 3: 14-17, ESV)

"For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God." (I Peter 2:20, ESV)

"Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you" (I Peter 4:12-14, ESV)

"For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known." (I Corinthians 13:12, ESV)

"Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." (Colossians 3:12-17, NIV)

"God allows in the bitter so that we will know that only He is sweet."

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade — kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith — of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire — may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.
Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls."

~I Peter 1:3-9 NIV

"Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.
Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.
And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us."

~Romans 5:1-5 NIV

"Blessed Be Your Name
In the land that is plentiful
Where Your streams of abundance flow
Blessed be Your name

Blessed Be Your name
When I'm found in the desert place
Though I walk through the wilderness
Blessed Be Your name

Every blessing You pour out
I'll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
Still I will say

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name

Blessed be Your name
When the sun's shining down on me
When the world's 'all as it should be'
Blessed be Your name

Blessed be Your name
On the road marked with suffering
Though there's pain in the offering
Blessed be Your name

Every blessing You pour out
I'll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
Still I will say

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name

You give and take away
You give and take away
My heart will choose to say
Lord, blessed be Your name"
~Matt Redman

"You are not a god
Created by human hands
You are not a god
Dependent on any mortal man
You are not a god
In need of anything we can give
By Your plan, that's just the way it is

You are God alone
From before time began
You were on Your throne
Your are God alone
And right now
In the good times and bad
You are on Your throne
You are God alone

You're the only God
Whose power none can contend
You're the only God
Whose name and praise will never end
You're the only God
Who's worthy of everything we can give
You are God
And that's just the way it is

Unchangeable
Unshakable
Unstoppable
That's what You are"
~Phillips Craig & Dean

"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.
I came that they may have life and have it abundantly."
~John 10:10 ESV

"Do not give the devil a foothold."
~Ephesians 4:27 NIV

"Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God's interests, but man's."
~Matthew 16:23 NASB

"I need thee every hour, most gracious Lord;
no tender voice like thine can peace afford.

I need thee, O I need thee;
every hour I need thee;
O bless me now, my Savior, I come to thee.

I need thee every hour; stay thou nearby;
temptations lose their power when thou art nigh.

I need thee every hour, in joy or pain;
come quickly and abide, or life is vain.

I need thee every hour; teach me thy will;
and thy rich promises in me fulfill.

I need thee every hour, most Holy One;
O make me thine indeed, thou blessed Son."

~Annie S. Hawks

"But they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint."
~Isaiah 40:31 ESV

"Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!"
~Psalm 27:14 ESV

"He may delay because it would not be safe to give us at once what we ask: we are not ready for it. To give ere we could truly receive, would be to destroy the very heart and hope of prayer, to cease to be our Father. The delay itself may work to bring us nearer to our help, to increase the desire, perfect the prayer, and ripen the receptive condition." ~George MacDonald

"He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake."
~Psalm 23:3 ESV

"Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you;
He will never allow the righteous to be shaken."
~Psalm 55:22 NASB

celebrate the silence.

lately, God has been teaching me the value of silence. it's not a discipline that comes easy to me, nor one that is easy to understand. don't get me wrong, being a dreamer, I often spend time in my imagination or pondering the great truths of life, but quiet prayer & personal reflection don't always come easily. maybe that's because it's hard to face reality sometimes, it's easier to live in denial with noise and muffle the truth, stifle our feelings.

this week was a good getaway, forced me to get alone with my thoughts and alone with God, and though I fought it at first, He kept pulling on my heart. thank God He is so gracious and tender and loving and patient for me to come to Him, instead of forcing me to my knees. when I got quiet in prayer, and just prayed over everyone and everything that came to my mind, He opened me up to reveal some pretty important things to me, things that were kind of obvious, but that I had been blind to. maybe He knew that I wouldn't or couldn't understand or accept them until now, so He was patient for me to become open & silent.

maybe if I took time every day for silence & prayerful reflection instead of waiting for a rare week's vacation, it wouldn't take me so long to hear what God's telling me. I aim to be so closely attuned to God's voice & will that decisions are effortless.

I am humbled.

children in need

http://www.compassion.com/

Make a difference to one child with just $38/month - we buy jeans or books or concert tickets or a really nice dinner out with that much, and that feeds, clothes, shelters, & schools them for a whole month!

God has really placed giving on my heart as of late. Truly, we are just stewards of the money & resources God has put in our hands; none of it belongs to us. We "earn" it, but He gives us life & breath each day, the ability to earn it, and the opportunities & circumstances to work. How selfish of us to keep 100% of our earnings and not share with those starving and in need?

I now have a child in Kenya with Compassion and a child in Brazil with http://www.worldvision.org/ - my dream is to eventually sponsor a child on each continent. I tell you this not to brag, but to inspire you to make a difference, too. I read about a church that gives away 50% of its budget because they are taking Jesus' command to "Love your neighbor as yourself" seriously; I really hope & aspire to do that someday.
